The island is dominated by pear-shaped vegetation with the main species of ladanies<\/strong> (laudanum), afanes<\/strong> (Sarcopoterium spinosum), ephedres<\/strong> (ephedra foeminea), levandes<\/strong> (lavender), reikia<\/strong> (heather), kritama<\/strong> (samphire), kapari<\/strong> (caper), rigani<\/strong> (oregano), dendrolivano<\/strong> (rosemary), thymari<\/strong> (thyme), faskomilo<\/strong> (sage), styrakes<\/strong> (styrax), throumbia<\/strong> (summer savory) and galatsides<\/strong> (milkweed).<\/p>\n The trees that are found here are the thalassokedra<\/strong> (Juniperus oxycedrus), thamnokyparissa<\/strong> (Juniperus phoenicea), pournaria<\/strong> (Quercus coccifera), aries<\/strong> (holm oaks), fyllikia<\/strong> (phillyrea latifolia), skina<\/strong> (pistacia), cocorevithies<\/strong> (pistacia terebinthus), agrielies<\/strong> (wild olive tree), haroupies<\/strong> (carob trees), koumaries<\/strong> (arbutus unedo), gortsies<\/strong> (pyrus spinosa), krategei<\/strong> (crataegus), pikramygdalies<\/strong> (bitter almond trees), armyrikia<\/strong> (tamarisks).<\/p>\n In the central and northern areas there are rich pine<\/strong> forests, which formerly covered almost the entire island, and near the streams there are platania<\/strong> (plane trees), sfendamia<\/strong> (maples), pikrodafnes<\/strong> (oleanders) and lygaries<\/strong> (chaste trees).<\/p>\n It is important that in a few areas of the island there are clusters of\u00a0Theophrastus palm trees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Throughout Karpathos, 923 plant species have been recorded, of which 66 are endemic to Greece, 28 are endemic to Crete, eleven are endemic to the Kasos-Karpathos complex and nine are endemic to Karpathos-Saria.<\/p>\n The most important species that are endemic to the island or to Greece are found only here are silines<\/strong> (silene), agriograryfallo<\/strong> (dianthus fruticosus), kambanoules<\/strong> (campanula), amarando<\/strong> (limonium), paeonia<\/strong>, fteri<\/strong> (pteridium aquilinum), agrioskorda<\/strong> (allium), irida<\/strong> (iris) whereas other important species are crocus<\/strong>, viola<\/strong>, kolhiko<\/strong> (colchicum pusillum) and orhidea<\/strong> (orchid).<\/p>\n
