{"id":25303,"date":"2023-01-09T16:33:52","date_gmt":"2023-01-09T14:33:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/travelkarpathos.gr\/fauna\/"},"modified":"2023-01-13T15:41:12","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T13:41:12","slug":"fauna","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/travelkarpathos.gr\/en\/fauna\/","title":{"rendered":"Fauna"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The island is important for <strong>bird<\/strong> <strong>life<\/strong>, as it is located on a large migratory road.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among the predators here live <strong>spizaetei<\/strong> (Hieraaetus fasciatus), <strong>mavropetrites<\/strong>, (Falco eleonorae), <strong>aetogerakines<\/strong> (Buteo rufinus), <strong>gerakines<\/strong> (Buteo buteo), <strong>petrites<\/strong> (Falco peregrinus), <strong>hrisogeraka<\/strong> (Faucon biarmique), <strong>kirkinezia<\/strong> (Falco naumanni), and <strong>varhokirkineza<\/strong> (Falco tinnunculus).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the phrygana the <strong>island perdika<\/strong> (partridge) is still found, the presence of <strong>korakas<\/strong> (crow) and <strong>kokkinokaliakoudas<\/strong> (red-billed chough) in the mountains is frequent, while in the wetland of Tristoma there are many <strong>parydatia<\/strong> (waders).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The area is significant for <strong>seabirds<\/strong>, such as the <strong>rare Aegean gull<\/strong> (larus audouinii), the <strong>thalassokorakas<\/strong> (phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii), the <strong>artemis<\/strong> (calonectris diomedea) and the <strong>michos<\/strong> (puffinus yelkouan).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other birds of the island are <strong>trigoni<\/strong> (streptopelia turtur), <strong>agrioeristero<\/strong> (wild pigeon), <strong>tito<\/strong> (tyto alba), <strong>koukouvagia<\/strong> (athene noctua), <strong>gionis<\/strong> (otus scops), <strong>gidovizi<\/strong> (caprimulgus europaeus), <strong>dendrokelada<\/strong> (anthus trivialis), <strong>koridallos<\/strong> (alaudidae), <strong>stahtara<\/strong> (apus apus), <strong>ohrostahtara<\/strong> (apus pallidus), the <strong>rare ammopetroklis<\/strong> (oenanthe isabellina), <strong>stahtopetroklis<\/strong> (oenanthe oenanthe), <strong>asprokolina<\/strong> (oenanthe hispanica), <strong>galazokotsifas<\/strong> (monticola solitarius), <strong>mavrolemis<\/strong> (saxicola torquata), <strong>mavrotsirovakos<\/strong> (sylvia melanocephala), <strong>ageotsirovakos<\/strong> (sylvia rueppelli), <strong>ohrostritsida<\/strong> (hippolais pallida), <strong>aetomahos<\/strong> (lanius collurio), <strong>kokkinokefalas<\/strong> (lanius senator), <strong>sikofagos<\/strong> (oriolus oriolus), <strong>karderina<\/strong> (carduelis carduelis), <strong>floros<\/strong> (carduelis chloris), <strong>faneto<\/strong> (carduelis cannabina), <strong>fryganotsihlono<\/strong> (emberiza caesia), <strong>abelourgos<\/strong> (emberiza melanocephala) and <strong>tsiftas<\/strong> (miliaria calandra).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Karpathos occupies a unique place in the world because of two endemic amphibians that are unique here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Kochylina<\/strong> is a salamander living in North Karpathos and the <strong>frog<\/strong> of Karpathos is a small frog of the stream. Both species are found in the Red Book of Endangered Vertebrates of Greece and are strictly protected by international laws.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>herpetopod<\/strong> includes the <strong>endemic<\/strong> <strong>kirtodachtylos<\/strong> (mediodactylus kotschyi), <strong>avlefaros<\/strong> (ablepharus kitaibelii), <strong>liakoni<\/strong> (chalcides ocellatus), <strong>samiamidi<\/strong> (hemidactylus turcicus), <strong>ofisopa<\/strong> (ophisops elegans), <strong>mavros efios<\/strong> (dolichophis jugularis), <strong>thamnofido<\/strong> (eirenis modestus), <strong>agiofido<\/strong> (telescopus fallax) and <strong>nerofido<\/strong> (natrix natrix), and the sea turtle <strong>kareta<\/strong> is common in the seas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From the mammals in Karpathos there is an undisputed protagonist, the <strong>Mediterranean monk seal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From the rest of the mammals here live only <strong>hedgehogs<\/strong>, <strong>hares<\/strong>, <strong>European rabbits<\/strong>, some species of small <strong>mice<\/strong> and <strong>bats<\/strong>, such as <strong>rhinolofos<\/strong> (rhinolofus vlasii), <strong>pyrromyotida<\/strong> (myotis emarginatus), <strong>vounonyhterida<\/strong> (Hypsugo savii), <strong>nanonyhterida<\/strong> (pipistrellus pipistrellus) and <strong>nyhtonomos<\/strong> (tadarida teniotis).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are many rare and endemic invertebrates on the island, such as <strong>land crab<\/strong>, <strong>cricket<\/strong>, <strong>grasshopper<\/strong>, <strong>butterfly<\/strong>, <strong>jizzica<\/strong>, <strong>isopoda<\/strong>, <strong>coleopterus<\/strong> and <strong>snails<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the sea area around Karpathos there are large areas of <strong>posidonia<\/strong> <strong>oceanica<\/strong> meadows, while the bottom holds even good numbers of <strong>lobsters<\/strong> despite overfishing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naturagraeca.com\">http:\/\/www.naturagraeca.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] The island is important for bird life, as it is located on a large migratory road.
