Karpathos or Pigadia<\/strong>, as is known the capital and the port of the island, is located on the southeastern side of the island. It is built in the same location as the ancient town of Posidio. At the top of the hill there are parts of the ancient acropolis and the Cyclopean walls.<\/p>\n

The city of Karpathos is a modern city. Most homes and public buildings are new and were built by expatriates living in USA, who each summer set off on their island. The city tour is a pleasant experience for every visitor. In every neighborhood you will come across beautiful pictures that combine island tradition with modern amenities.<\/p>\n

From the sights of the city, it is worth seeing the ruins of the paleo Christian basilica of Agia Fotini<\/strong>, located on the coastal street of the city. From the architectural members of the temple we conclude that it was built on the foundations of an earlier ancient sanctuary.<\/p>\n

One of the natural sights of the island worth seeing is Poseidon’s cave<\/strong>, located in Myloi. Findings show that the cave was used in antiquity and as a place of worship. The sculptured sanctuary was dedicated to Poseidon or to Aphrodite.<\/p>\n

Swim in the clear sandy beaches around the harbor. The city’s beach with extensive sand attracts crowds. And as the sun falls, walk under the moonlight and enjoy the seascapes around the harbor. Follow the sound of music and discover nightclubs where you will have fun until morning. In Karpathos there are many bars that play Greek and foreign music, big clubs and live music centers. Whatever kind of music you prefer, it is certain that you will find a hangout ideal for you and your company.<\/p>\n

Karpathian cuisine is famous for its unique recipes. Some of the most popular dishes are noodles, macarounes<\/strong>, kofta<\/strong> and kouloures<\/strong>. Among them are the baklava<\/strong>, the donuts<\/strong> and the sousamomelo (sesame honey)<\/strong> which is the traditional sweet of marriage.<\/p>\n
