The direction of wind, speed and constant strength throughout the summer season, combined with the unique morphology of the area, make Karpathos unique for windsurfers.

All these characteristics have remained stable for thousands of years, since only by chance cannot be considered the fact that the greatest poet of antiquity, Homer, called Karpathos “ANEMOESSA” (it means very strong winds blowing).

For about ten years, the Afiartis area, located to the south of the island (including the International Airport), is considered to be one of the most famous, advantageous and appropriate areas of the world for windsurfing. The Karpathos Surf Club runs on the side of Makris Gialos Beach or known as Chicken Bay. The wind blows coastal in shallow metallic waters and achieves winds between 2 and 7 Beaufort. It offers boards and sails for rent, as well as special lessons that have to do with the younger to the older age, but also from the beginner to the sports specialists.

In the area of Afiartis the World Speed Windsurfing Championship is held since 2006.

In the games, top 60 athletes from 18 countries and 5 continents took part, including 13-time world champion Bjorn Dunkerbeck and world record holder Finian Maynard.

The achievement of the World Championship on our island and its annual establishment is a major sporting event, not only for Karpathos but also for all of Greece, since during the speed races, a series of cultural events are organized that highlight and promote culture, the unique folkway of Karpathos and Greece abroad, as this is advertised in all media, and a large number of European media channels.

Apart from Afiartis, the beaches considered to be among the best for windsurfing are: Vatha, Pounta of NikoLakis, Valias, Makris Gialos and Agrilaopotamos.
