Saria is an island of the Aegean that is surrounded by the Karpathian Sea.

It belongs to the Dodecanese and is located just across the northern tip of Karpathos.

It has an area of 20.4 km2. and an altitude of 631 meters (2.067 feet). According to the 2011 census, there are 45 people living in the existing settlement in the northern part of the islet (Kato (G)i), Argos, of which 22 scientists are investigating the Mediterranean monk seals, as they said.

The shortest approach to Argos is made by sea and, more specifically, by the Palatia beach, through the gorge of the river Endi.

According to the Kallikrates Program (Law 3852/2010), the islet is governed by the Local Community of Olympus of the Municipality of Karpathos and is separated from Karpathos by a narrow and shallow strait, Strait of Saria, 100 meters wide, which is prohibitive for the passage of large draft vessels.

In the old days, the island was part of Karpathos and was separated from it by erosion.

The island is scattered from ancient monuments, ruins and remains of ancient settlements, and was also the base of Saracen pirates. Its ancient name was Saros and the 5th century. B.C. belonged to the Athenian Alliance.

In Saria there are traces of the presence of the Neolithic man and the early copper age. Remains of fortification have been found on the west slope of the hill Kastelos from the period of historical times.

In Palatia there are paleo-Christian and medieval buildings, while the peculiar medieval settlement of the 10th century with the strange vaulted buildings, located on the hill above the palaces, is believed to have been an Arab settlement or base of Saracen pirates.

It is an important biotope and breeding site for birds and marine organisms and has been designated as the “Important Bird Area of Europe” since it hosts a remarkable number of rare birds of prey, such as Hieraaetus fasciatus (Spizaetos), Buteo rufinus (Aetogerakina) and Falco eleonorae (Mavropetritis).

Saria, along with Karpathos and the surrounding Marine Region, due to the variety of habitats they have and the rare species they harbor, both at national and European level, belong to the Natura 2000 Network.

During the summer months, the beaches of the island are overwhelmed by many holidaymakers.
