The Archaeological Museum of Karpathos is located in the capital of the island, Pigadia, and has been operational since 2005 with the collaboration of the two local Committees of Antiquities (KB’ EPKA-4th EBA) under the 3rd Community Support Framework.

It is housed in the western wing of the Province House Complex, that was built during the Italian occupation.

It is a timeless museum and includes exhibits from prehistoric to post-Byzantine times.

The exhibition is divided into three sections:

  1. Section of prehistoric times that includes findings (in the island) from Neolithic period and the Minoan / Mycenaean period
  2. Section of historical times, with exhibits from the three ancient cities of the island, Karpathos, Arkeseis and Vrukounta
  3. Section of Byzantine times, with representative findings from the early Christian basilicas and settlements of Karpathos

The museum is dominated by the impressive wall-painting of the arch of the ruined church of Saint Apostles on the subject of Deesis and the hierarchs in co-liturgy. It dates back to the 14th century and is a remarkable example of painting in Karpathos, which over time would be completely destroyed. The conservation and enhancement stages of this wall-painting are detailed in the text, with a detailed description of the methodology used for the first time in the maintenance workshops of the 4th EBA with excellent results and a multi-year guarantee to maintain its excellent condition.
