Poseidon’s cave is located in Myloi. Leaving Pigadia and going southwest to Vroutsas and entering the narrow passage where the torrent flows into Pigadia, on your left hand you will encounter an area with dry stone walls and buildings half-broken. Stop and find the path that leads to Menetes along the road to the rock and the cave.
It is a monumental carved grave or sanctuary. This type was very common in the eastern Aegean. A sanctuary dedicated to the god of the sea, Poseidon, or to the goddess of love, Aphrodite could be probably housed in the cave. There are indications that there was a wooden roof in front. Perhaps it was the sanctuary of Aphrodite, a goddess popular in the lower classes. The speculation about Venus is based on the fact that archaeologists found statues of the goddess in the surrounding area. Moreover in Pigadia statues of the goddess have been found.
It is most likely that the goddess’s open-air sanctuary was the Cave of Parthenos (Virgin), which is 2 km farther, in the area of Vathypotamos. The cave is eroded by the constant use of shepherds.
