It is built with building materials from an ancient temple at the root of the Palaiokastro rock at the site of the 5th-century Early Christian Basilica of Agia Anastasia.

It has ornate flooring and a historic baptismal font that was saved from the pirates. Tradition says that the pirates had looted the church and loaded their prey on their ship. The baptismal font was found floating in the sea and the faithful locals put it back in the temple.

Excavations in the area were carried out by the Italian conquerors in 1924, and as a result remarkable findings were transferred to Rhodes.

All the yard space has mosaics that unfortunately have been worn out during the ages.
